October Athlete of the Month

Age: 34 Started CrossFit: I’ve been doing FLEX at CFT for about a year and a half but did Crossfit at CF-MHz in Frederick for about 3 years prior to joining CFT.Favorite Movement: Interval Running.

About Steve.

My wife, Josie, and I are from Iowa originally and have lived in Colorado for about 9 years. We just had our first child, Ellis, in June of this year and he is probably the best baby in the world; not biased at all. Parenthood is the most incredible and awe-inspiring life experience imaginable. I work as an Operations Director at DigitalGlobe, a satellite imagery organization, just down the street in the big satellite-looking glass building.

How has Crossfit changed you?

It has introduced me to some really great, inspiring people and a community of hard-working individuals and coaches.

What is your favorite quote or mantra you live by?

Self-improvement on a daily basis has tremendous ripple effect potential on one’s self and those around you. Being a kind, compassionate and good person can be as simple as following the Golden Rule.

What is your favorite WOD/CrossFit movement?

Any workout involving interval running.

What is your least favorite WOD/CrossFit movement?

Overhead squats.

Athletic/Sports history highlights:

I grew up wrestling from first grade through college and wrestled at Iowa State University. After college I was looking for a competitive outlet and found ultra-marathon running. I usually participate in 50 and 100 milers and really enjoy the mental challenge of running for 24+ hours. A few years ago I ran solo across the state of Iowa in 7 days and raised $15,000 for Habitat for Humanity in Tajikistan. It’s really cool and rewarding when we can tie in real impact through realizing and actionizing our strengths and gifts.

How has CrossFit improved your overall wellness?

FLEX has been a great complement to running through building overall strength. It’s also a great mental outlet at the end of a long day in the office.

Advice to new people?

Crossfit Thornton is a great community of members and coaches who all support one another. I can’t stress how important the support component is at Crossfit Thornton. Our coaches make all the difference and are a resource of encouragement, positivity and knowledge. Make a commitment to attending classes consistently and the results and experience will pay dividends.
