If you haven’t read Warped Beauty Standards and Embracing the Buff I would highly encourage it. A long time ago a female athlete came to me expressing concern about “bulking up” and “getting big”. To be quite honest I really didn’t know what to say. She was my first female athlete and that was a concern that I had never heard before. If anything I hear questions specific to wanting to bulk up and get big and that just leads to a discussion on diet and nutrition. Unfortunately that conversation didn’t seem to help in this case.
Thankfully the Embracing the Buff article came to my attention and it was exactly what the doctor ordered. I immediately printed it off and gave the blog to my athlete along with a laundry list of other sites, blogs, and articles for her to peruse. The result was a more motivated athlete that not only started to embrace the barbell but embrace the buff as well.
What are your concerns with training? Are you training for performance or training for looks? Do you think you can have both?
