2,744 step-ups for time. That was my workout this weekend. I took a trip with my girlfriend and her family up to The Incline in Manitou Springs and it was a ball. Not only did my legs get swole but I got to spend the day doing exactly what I was supposed to be doing: using my fitness in functional ways!

Sure, by today’s standards The Incline is nothing more than a tourist attraction and something to check off of an activities list but it wasn’t that long ago that people were climbing this thing for their livelihood. The old railway where The Incline now sits was originally built in order to move supplies up to a hydroelectric plant. That means, at some point, there was some poor sucker who was hauling railroad ties and steel up that mountain side in order to build something I would be using as steps over a hundred years later (I bet he had a big squat).

The whole trip got me to thinking, what else have I been taking for granted? It wasn’t too long ago that I spent a weekend in Aspen but it never occurred to me to think about the men that blazed the trail that is now a safe trip through Leadville and over the Continental Divide (I bet you they had some badass beards and a shoulder to overhead to match).

I don’t know if I can even imagine what kind of grit these men had who didn’t know how far they had to go. They only knew where they started and (generally) what direction they were headed. Beyond that they could have been walking off the end of the Earth for all they knew. But now our lives are different. There isn’t much left of the world that is unknown. We have come a far way to be in a position to want to move heavy weight for recreation and not for work. To be able to take a lazy Sunday walk up a mountain for sport and not for survival. Compared to everyone that has come before us it seems like such a trivial problem we have to be able to find an hour a day to use our bodies for what they were made for. So this week I challenge each and every one of you to spend an hour a day using your body they way it was meant to be used. Go lift some heavy shit then go outside and run until your lungs burst. Then drink some beer and spend some time with your tribe.
