Thoughts on the 2013 CrossFit Games

Hey everyone, I’m back from a full week in Los Angeles for the 2013 CrossFit Games. Bridget and I had a blast, got to meet a ton of the competitors, and I even gave Pat Barber a high-five. Yes, it was cool. So here we go!

1. Rich Freaking Froning

There was doubt for the first 3 days of competition…until Rich became Rich, and won every single event on Sunday, securing himself a third straight Games victory. I’ve mentioned this in class before, but I want to reiterate- Rich is the best because his movement patterns are FLAWLESS. Absolutely perfect. His last reps look identical to his first reps. This allows him to remain injury free, recover faster, and move some seriously heavy weight. PRACTICE MAKES PERMANENT. Remember that when you come to class. Make each movement as good as you can, every time.

2. We still have the best community there is.

Every spectator was super nice, everyone talks to everyone, and the athletes will cheer their competitors on mid-workout. We are the only sport in the world that does this. We got to spend a few minutes chatting with Marcus Hendren (who finished 6th overall) too.

3. I think we should make a run at Regionals in 2014.

What does that mean? Focus on the things you “strongly dislike”…including double-unders, gymnastics, and the ever-so-difficult short and heavy metcon. Hit it hard. Work together. Learn from the coaches and the myriad of other resources available to you online. Stay motivated. Keep showing up.

Hope you all got to see some of the competition from this past weekend on ESPN. The Finals will be re-broadcast this Sunday on ESPN2, so look it up!
