No Running!

Over the last month I have spent my Sunday afternoons in a local rec-center swimming pool. As I sat on the side of the pool and watched my children’s swim lessons, I easily got distracted by a sight that America is getting a bit too comfortable ignoring.

We as a society have now accomplished a feat that should never be celebrated or achieved. For the first time in HISTORY, not just American history or recent history, but in ALL of time we now can say our children’s generation is not expected to outlive us, the parents! That’s right folks; we are raising our children to die before us.

And if society stays on the course it’s currently on, life expectancy will continue to fall and fall. Umm, did someone say 30 is the new 80?

You want to know irony… the “life guards” were just as out of shape as the children and adults they were watching in case of emergency action was called for.

So, now what? What can I do? What can we do?

Answer: Nothing, unless it’s your kid! Then you can do a lot! We, the CrossFit community, can help, but you have to open the door, you have to make that phone call. We have the background and tools to help, but the hardest step is yours. Isn’t your child worth it? Get moving!

Coach Glassman, the founder of CrossFit, was recently talking about the future of health care. He said, “Physicians are lifeguards, trainers are swim coaches. When you need a lifeguard, you need a lifeguard, not a swim coach! But if you need a lifeguard, you probably needed a swim coach and didn’t get one.” We are YOUR swim coaches!
