What did you know about CrossFit before coming here?:
To be completely honest, everything that I thought I knew about CrossFit before coming to CrossFit Thornton, has sorta been all but wrong. I had a perception of CrossFit as being nothing but a fat burning, high intensity, interval type training program. CrossFit Thornton has shown me how diverse the programming really is. With varieties of Olympic lifts, gymnastic strengthening movements as well as dreaded wall balls, burpees and double unders… There are constantly new challenges to set goals in!
Why did you try CrossFit Thornton?
Well, initially, I was looking for a CrossFit gym that was local to me and had hours that worked around my already busy schedule. After arranging my intro session and basically having the floor mopped with me during my baseline work out, I knew that CrossFit was what I needed to help me get to where I want to be with both my fitness and positive outlook in life. From the very beginning, Coach Lawrence has been such a positive entity in my CrossFit experience and his enthusiasm played a significant part in my choice of joining the CrossFit Thornton crew!
How do you like our program?
For real?? I love the programming here at our box. I’ve come to really appreciate all the squat cycles we go through, the chances that we get to hone in on our Olympic weightlifting skills, the Thursday gymnastic strengthening classes as well as a decent amount of traditional programming.
What is the best part of being at CF Thornton?
The best part of being at CrossFit Thornton, by far, is the COMMUNITY! I would not accomplish as near as much inside the gym as well as out if it weren’t for the positive attitudes of all the folks around me. We all seem to empathize with each other. Whether it be an amazing day at the gym where we set two PRs in one class or if we are in a slump that week and are nursing mobility issues, everyone at the CrossFit Thornton has had a real positive impact in my CrossFit experience!
Has your life changed since being here?
Most definitely. my overall well-being has improved immensely. Even though I’ve had setbacks and injuries during my time at the box, I’ve learned so many ways to avoid injury and how to use mobilization and healthier eating to make a speedy recovery.
If there were one movement you wish the coaches didn’t know, what would it be?
If you would have asked me this question 6 months ago, I would have probably had a number of movements to list. At this time, I really enjoy the challenges that all the workouts pose to me. The one that I personally have a vendetta with would be, THE SNATCH. Due to my lack of overhead mobility, this workout gives me one heck of a battle just to keep weight overhead while squatting.
If you could only do one movement for exercise for the rest of your life, what would you choose?
One workout… Well gee willickers. I’m gonna have to go with the clean and jerk. Heavy as I can manage, from the floor, catch in a full squat, drop right under the bar for a split jerk. Yup, the clean and jerk, love it!
What are your goals for the next 3 months?
First and foremost, heal from the wrist injury I incurred a few weeks ago and get back up to my old clean and jerk PR weight. Start working on my kipping muscle ups as well as butterfly kip on the pull ups. Also, look into my Level 1 certification so that I can continue coaching development with CrossFit Thornton!
Coach Mark, you’ve been extremely helpful since day 1. You are extremely knowledgeable in the lifts and CrossFit movements. And personally like to thank you for working with me while recovering from injury.
Coach Lawrence, you really make our box unique and bring such a great vibe to the CrossFit Thornton experience. You’ve literally made every aspect of CrossFit that much better. Never a dull moment with you as a coach!
Dan and Jeff, my longtime lifting partners. I love how energetic and compassionate you guys are when I get to share a class with you all. It’s just one heck of a great time when either of you are there. Always feel like I accomplish that much more.
My fellow athletes that I’ve been with over the last year(ish) – everyone has been nothing short of phenomenal!!!
