Name: Dave S.
Occupation: CFO for an Investment Banking and Real Estate Development Firm. I am also heavily involved in supporting at-risk youth in our community through fundraising and service to charity. Here is a shameless plug, but check out www.da2030.com to learn more about a great foundation I am privileged to be a part of.
What did you know about CrossFit before coming here? I have a friend who has been doing CrossFit for a while. Our conversations about it sparked my interest, so I started looking in to it a little more. I knew a little about the programming, but was pretty apprehensive to give it a try.
Why did you try CrossFit Thornton? I met Mark and Susan at a preschool fundraiser. We talked for a while and they encouraged me to give myself the gift of burpees. As I said above, I knew a little about CrossFit, but had never been to a box or tried a workout. I met with Lawrence, did my initial workout, and it just seemed like a great fit. I haven’t looked back since.
How do you like our program? I’m hooked. I feel like it is a constant challenge, and I’m always trying to improve. I love the individual instruction the coaches are able to provide, and the additional input from the wily veterans along the way.
What is the best part of being at CF Thornton? For me, it just seems like the perfect fit. I like the small class sizes, the family like atmosphere, the great support from the coaches, the list goes on and on. I don’t think I can highlight just one thing.
Has your life changed since being here? Well since I started CrossFit, I did try and get a drink at a bar by doing 15 burpees. The bartender was adamant that they don’t accept burpees as payment. I’ve never been back to that bar again…
If there were one movement you wish the coaches didn’t know, what would it be? I feel that if I say here that I hate one particular exercise, Lawrence will try to find a way to train the hate right out of me. Therefore, I love all the exercises. Do you hear me Lawrence? I love them all! Except the Snatch. That’s really hard.
If you could only do one movement for exercise for the rest of your life, what would you choose? I guess I’d have to ask why I am limited to only one exercise. If it’s because the Zombie apocalypse from the show Walking Dead actually happened, then I suppose running would be the most useful exercise. If that’s not the case, I’d probably stick with the burpee. It’s a great full body workout that can be done anytime and anywhere.
What are your goals for the next 3 months? My ultimate goal is to put those two elusive letters “Rx” after all of my workouts. I definitely have some skills to improve upon, but I know I can get there. I know I’m not the fastest or the strongest athlete, and probably never will be. But if I can start doing all the workouts as prescribed, I’ll know I’ve made tremendous progress.
Shout-outs? To all my 6:00am cohorts. Mandi, Leah, Kevin, Luke, Meghan, Joey, and the others who pop in for an early morning workout on occasion. It’s a great way to start the day, seeing all of your smiling… then pained… and then smiling faces. And I of course have to say thanks to Lawrence and Jeff for getting up early to coach us.
