Do you remember what you did for fun when you were a kid? For some of us that was longer ago than for others, but the answer is probably similar. I remember LOVING to be outside! I was lucky enough to grow up in Florida. My best memories are from Key West and Pensacola. My sisters and I were outside with friends constantly. And we always had a blast! We played 4-square, tether ball, hopscotch, road bikes (without helmets and on the handlebars!), built forts in the woods, went fishing, boating, shrimping (yes, I know how to shrimp), and generally just ‘hung out’ with friends…without cell phones. Instead of iPods, we had boom boxes with cassette tapes – and they were cool. And we had the best neighborhood BBQs!! It was genuine, no-nonsense fun. That kind of fun seems to have been lost lately. Kids seem to all have some sort of electronic device that they’re on; adults too (me included)! This Spring/Summer I’m going to try to get my kids back to the kind of play that I remember. I want them to experience that genuinely ‘fun’ feeling of just playing outside with friends and family. (I will require them to were helmets, though. And probably no handlebars.)
Perfect timing, because CrossFit Thornton is celebrating their 1st birthday on Saturday!! And guess what? We’re marking this milestone with a BBQ! A good ole fashioned BBQ with meat, buns (non-paleo), sides, and beer (probably BYOB!) Everyone is welcome! Feel free to bring something, but it’s not necessary. Oh Dan P., if you’re going to come, PLEASE bring your amazing bacon potato salad! 🙂
