Turkey Challenge Wrap-Up
This past weekend CrossFit Thornton had 5 athletes head to the Turkey Challenge. This was our first competition as a gym and our guys rep’d us like champs!
The day started off with a killer couplet of snatches and killer ropes, a maniacal contraption of manilla rope used as a jump rope that tore up hands and lungs all over the place. In the women’s open Angela attacked the couplet like a pro and while other competitors DNF’ed she executed every rep perfectly and finished in 23rd. In the Men’s open Jeff and Jason hit the ground running. While the snatches were a breeze for Jeff it just wasn’t enough to save him and he lost to the Killer Rope. Jason was absolutely in his element and he killed the couplet at 8 minutes allowing him to finish in 13th. In the women’s RX division Bridget almost met the cutoff time but also fell to the Killer Rope. Lawrence started off strong in the men’s RX division but also couldn’t handle the Killer Rope.
The second workout of the day featured lots of pulling and the infamous Bear Complex! Fortunately the Bear was only a 3RM and our athletes jumped at the chance to lift some heavy weight. Angela went big early at 85lbs and missed a portion of the complex. Instead of trying to save the round she put the bar down, gathered herself up, and went right back at it. On her second attempt Angela killed the bear and got herself on the board. Jeff and Jason started off strong with big attempts at 185 but couldn’t get it together and had to readjust their plans. Both put 135 on the bar in order to get themselves on the board and while Jeff sneaked in under the clock Jason just couldn’t rep it out. Bridget had to deal with a near sighted judge and almost smashed his head when he couldn’t figure out what was going on. In the end she also put up 85lbs in order to stay in contention. Lawrence, already spent from his sets of muscle-ups, put 175 on the bar and executed the Bear in a big way securing a 17th place finish for that event.
On the second day the CrossFit Thornton athletes showed up ready to play.
With only 1 workout left to go before being cut down to the top 12 they were ready to put it all out on the line. The third workout of the day was a laundry list of a chipper workout complete with power cleans, toes-to-bar, box jumps, burpee pull-ups (or bar muscle ups for Bridget and Lawrence), dumbell push presses, more killer ropes, thrusters, pull-ups, burpees, and overhead lunges.
Angela got the team rolling and put up a solid 128 reps while Jeff knocked out 154 reps after 10 miserable minutes and Jason put up an amazing 180 reps. Bridget and Lawrence worked side by side and after all was said and done Bridget pulled in 199 reps and thanks to some pure grit on the bar muscle-ups Lawrence managed 128 reps.
Unfortunately their scores put everyone but Bridget out of the top 12 in their divisions. With 1 workout left to go of 3 Rounds for time of, 20 Kettlebell snatches, 65 ft. plate carry, 12 Burpee plate jumps, 65 ft. plate carry she had her work cut out for her. Bridget started off in 9th place overall and got to work fast. Right out of the gate she split the plate carry into 2 trips hoping to outpace her competitors. At first it worked but by the 3rd round the extra work had caught up to her and another athlete had managed to skate by her. Undeterred Bridget kept up the work and by the end of the day beat out 2 other athletes and moved up from 9th place to finish the day at number 7.
